Nvidia Hits $4 Trillion
Nvidia shares rose 2.5% Wednesday to top $164 each, making it the first public company to reach a $4 trillion valuation. The chipmaker's stock has surged over 1000% from around $14 at the beginning of 2023, driven by investor frenzy over artificial intelligence. The company reached $2 trillion in 2024, then jumped to $3 trillion in June before hitting the latest milestone.
The company’s specialized chips power AI systems, including ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and self-driving cars, making it central to what CEO Jensen Huang calls “the next industrial revolution." The tech giant delivered $18.8 billion in profit last quarter as revenue surged 69% to $44.1 billion.
Nvidia’s rise has made it the most heavily weighted stock in the S&P 500, giving it outsized influence over the index and many investment portfolios. Its rapid growth has helped fuel a broader AI-driven market rally, lifting indexes to record highs despite concerns over inflation and Trump’s trade policies.
Baby Malaria Treatment
Swiss regulators approved the world's first malaria treatment specifically designed for newborn babies. Coartem Baby, developed by Novartis, is approved for infants weighing less than 11 pounds - typically babies younger than two months who previously received doses of drugs meant for older children. The cherry-flavored medicine dissolves in breast milk for easier administration.
Eight African countries that participated in the approval process, including Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda, are expected to grant rapid approvals within 90 days. Novartis plans to provide the treatment on a largely not-for-profit basis in areas where malaria is endemic.
About 30 million babies are born in malaria-risk areas of Africa annually, making them immediately vulnerable to mosquito bites that transmit the disease. Malaria killed 597,000 people globally in 2023, with children under 5 accounting for 76% of deaths in Africa.
Russia Attacks Ukraine
Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the war began, firing a record 728 drones and 13 missiles overnight. The barrage struck 10 regions, including Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Lutsk near the Polish border, killing one person and injuring two. Poland responded by scrambling fighter jets and placing its armed forces on highest alert.
The attack came just after President Trump reversed a U.S. decision to suspend weapons shipments to Ukraine, including Patriot missiles used for air defense. When asked who authorized the original weapons pause, Trump, sitting next to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, replied, "I don't know. Why don't you tell me?"
President Zelensky called the barrage "a telling attack" timed to undermine peace efforts. Trump also voiced growing frustration with Putin, telling reporters "We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin" and calling the Russian leader's promises "meaningless."
