Today’s Big Story

Roadster Takes Flight

  • Tesla demonstrated its redesigned Roadster Thursday at a SpaceX facility in Texas nearly nine years after first unveiling the second-generation electric sports car.

  • During the demo, the car climbed a curved ramp that MotorTrend estimated was five or six stories tall and stopped upside down as suction fans held its tires against the surface. It then reversed before making another run and launching off the ramp upside down. Compressed-gas thrusters rolled it upright and controlled its landing. In a separate maneuver, it jumped over a row of Tesla vehicles and performed a midair “kickflip.” (See video of the stunts here)

  • Tesla also showed a recorded acceleration test that clocked 0–60 mph in a company-reported 0.81 seconds. Musk said production is planned for 2028. Tesla lists the flight-equipped version as invitation-only and not approved for public roads.

Saturday’s Quick Hits

  • The Justice Department sued California Thursday after state officials refused its demand to withhold mail ballots from voters federal authorities identified as “likely” noncitizens. The administration wants those ballots set aside until citizenship can be verified. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state would not comply with the demands. (More)

  • Federal health officials submitted a plan for White House review that would let specialty pharmacies make certain peptide injections without facing FDA enforcement. The products are promoted for benefits such as healing injuries and building muscle but have not been established as safe and effective for those uses. The proposed policy would ease access while bypassing a formal rulemaking process that could take years. (More)

  • A federal appeals court ruling put phone and internet subsidies at risk for millions of rural and low-income Americans. The court found the FCC lacked congressional authorization to create the company administering the roughly $9 billion annual fund. A disruption could mean higher bills or reduced service, though no immediate cutoff has been announced. (More)

  • Researchers found a type of immune cell could recognize and kill small-cell lung cancer in miniature tumors grown from patients’ tissue. This cancer often hides from the immune cells that standard immunotherapy relies on. Two existing drugs strengthened the attack in laboratory tests, but the approach has not yet been shown to improve outcomes in patients. (More)

  • The Milwaukee Brewers reached their first World Series since 1982 after overcoming a four-run deficit to beat the Dodgers 6–4 Thursday and complete an NLCS sweep. Garrett Mitchell’s sixth-inning homer put Milwaukee ahead for good. The victory ended Los Angeles’ bid for a third straight championship a year after the Dodgers swept Milwaukee in the same round. (More)

  • White House press secretary Katie Zacharia was dismissed Friday after five days in the job, according to a White House official. Trump earlier said he had encouraged her to reconsider the role. Her departure followed scrutiny of her legal credentials after she acknowledged she had not passed the bar exam despite describing herself as a lawyer. (More)

Weekly Dose of Positive

  • American Prairie’s bison herd reached 1,016 animals after its annual calf count as the Montana nonprofit works to restore grasslands and expand space for the animals. (More)

  • A woman created a car-seat identification tag that becomes a hospital wristband to help emergency crews keep children’s medical details and family contacts together after crashes. (More)

  • A Georgia teenager raised $30,000 and secured 400 donated bicycles while organizing free riding lessons to help children and families gain transportation. (More)

  • A young moviegoer raised $146,000 for an elderly Tennessee theater worker’s retirement after seeing her collect trash during a visit to the cinema. (More)
