Israel Hezbollah Ceasefire

(Reuters)
Israel's cabinet approved a US-backed ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah by a 10-1 vote.
Under the agreement, the Lebanese army will take control of southern Lebanon within 60 days, and Israel will withdraw its forces to allow civilians to return home.
Netanyahu stressed that the ceasefire depends on Hezbollah's actions, warning that Israel will respond forcefully to any violations. The ceasefire does not affect Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza.
The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began last year after Hezbollah launched rockets in solidarity with Hamas following its deadly October 7 attack on Israel. Israel’s response included a ground invasion and heavy strikes across Lebanon.
Recent escalation turned the conflict into a full-scale war. It has caused over 3,700 Lebanese and 140 Israeli deaths and displaced over 1 million Lebanese and 60,000 Israelis.
Update: The ceasefire officially began at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Walmart Cuts Back on DEI

(Ap Photo)
Walmart is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
The company confirmed it will not renew a $100 million racial equity center established after George Floyd’s death in 2020 and will no longer prioritize race or gender in supplier contracts.
Additionally, Walmart will stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s workplace inclusion index for LGBTQ+ employees and begin reviewing Pride events' grants to avoid content deemed inappropriate for children.
The changes at Walmart reflect growing conservative opposition to DEI efforts, especially after the Supreme Court ended affirmative action in college admissions in 2023. With its 1.6 million workers, Walmart is the largest company to roll back such policies.

Trump’s Tariffs

(Reuters / Jose Luis Gonzalez)
President-elect Donald Trump announced plans for significant tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.
He proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods to address drug trafficking and immigration issues and an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The tariffs will go into effect on January 20.
The proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico conflict with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which promotes largely duty-free trade among the three nations. Trump’s threats could force early renegotiations as the next review is in 2026.
Trump plans to slap China with an additional tariff for not doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl precursors into the US. China denies the accusations, citing anti-drug measures it has already implemented.
Economists predict that reinstating high tariffs could stoke inflation, harm US-China trade, create retaliation tariffs, and disrupt global supply chains.
