Florida vs. OpenAI
Florida became the first state to sue OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman over alleged harms caused by ChatGPT, filing 10 counts, including negligence, product liability, fraudulent misrepresentation, and public nuisance. The civil lawsuit seeks penalties and a court order.
The lawsuit cites ChatGPT's alleged role in planning a mass shooting at Florida State University and the killing of two graduate students at the University of South Florida. It also points to the wrongful death of teenager Sam Nelson, who allegedly received dangerous drug combination advice from ChatGPT that led to his death in 2025. OpenAI has been sued by families of at least seven individuals who allege its products caused suicides or harmful delusions.
OpenAI, valued at $852 billion after a $122 billion funding round in March, said it designs its systems with "safety at every step." A separate criminal investigation into the company, opened by Florida's attorney general in April, remains ongoing.
Remote Airport Screening
Boston Logan International Airport launched a pilot program allowing travelers to clear TSA security 25 miles away in Framingham before boarding a secure bus that takes them directly to their departure gate, bypassing airport checkpoints entirely.
The program was designed to ease congestion at Logan following historically long security lines this spring caused by TSA staffing shortages during the partial government shutdown. For $9, eligible Delta and JetBlue passengers can complete standard TSA screening offsite, transfer via secure shuttle, and arrive inside the airport's secure area.
Officials say the service is the first in the US to offer straight-to-gate access for all fare classes on both domestic and international flights. If successful, Boston airport plans to expand the program to additional airlines as airports search for ways to reduce congestion and shorten security wait times.
Homelessness Declines for the First Time in a Decade
US homelessness fell 3.3% last year, the first decline since 2016, according to a federal report released Friday. An estimated 745,652 people were homeless nationwide. California saw a 2.8% drop to 181,934, among the five states with the largest decreases alongside Illinois, Hawaii, Florida, and New York.
Communities that saw the biggest declines attributed them to opening new housing, placing people more quickly, and increasing street outreach. The data was collected in January 2025 and was released Friday after an unexplained five-month delay, with both parties claiming credit for the results.
The findings landed in the middle of a sharp policy dispute. The Trump administration wants to end "housing first" — which moves people into housing without preconditions — and replace it with housing that requires sobriety. California is one of 19 states suing the administration over efforts to redirect homelessness funds from permanent housing to temporary shelters.
