More Supreme Court Rulings

  • The Supreme Court issued three major decisions Tuesday on birthright citizenship, transgender athletes in girls' and women's sports, and coordinated campaign spending.

  • In a 6-3 ruling, the court blocked Trump's executive order limiting automatic citizenship for children born in the United States, finding it conflicted with the 14th Amendment's citizenship protections. The decision preserves birthright citizenship, which has applied to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil for more than a century.

  • The court also upheld laws in West Virginia and Idaho barring transgender athletes from competing in female sports, a ruling likely to affect 25 other states with similar laws. In a separate 6-3 decision, the justices struck down federal limits on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates, expanding campaign finance rights under the First Amendment.

Egg Price Fixing Settlement

  • The Justice Department and 15 states reached a proposed settlement with three of the nation's largest egg producers after accusing them of conspiring to manipulate wholesale egg prices between 2022 and 2025. Investigators alleged the companies coordinated bids to inflate industry price benchmarks that retailers use to set egg prices nationwide.

  • Under the proposed agreement, Cal-Maine Foods, Versova, and Hickman's Egg Ranch will provide 53 million eggs to food banks and community organizations and pay states $3.3 million. The companies denied wrongdoing, and the settlement still requires court approval.

  • The investigation comes after egg prices became a major consumer concern during the recent avian flu outbreak. A dozen Grade A eggs averaged $6.23 in March 2025 before falling to about $2.19, though producers argue bird flu and higher production costs—not collusion—were the primary drivers of price increases.

USMCA Trade Talks Begin

  • The Trump administration is expected to formally decline an automatic 16-year extension of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement today, triggering the trade pact's first mandatory review and opening negotiations over its future. The agreement will remain in effect during the review process.

  • The review stems from a "sunset clause" negotiated during Trump's first term that requires the three countries to decide every six years whether to extend the pact. If no agreement is reached, annual reviews will continue until 2036, when the agreement would expire unless renewed.

  • The United States is seeking major changes, including stricter North American content requirements for automobiles and new measures aimed at preventing Chinese goods from benefiting from the agreement. Mexico has backed extending the pact, while Canada says it is prepared to negotiate revisions.
