Semiannual Reports Proposal

  • President Trump proposed ending mandatory quarterly earnings reports on Monday, suggesting companies switch to semiannual reporting instead. He said the change would save money and let managers focus on long-term strategy. He attempted similar changes during his first term without success.

  • The proposal would require SEC approval, where Republicans hold a 3-1 majority and could implement changes within 6-12 months. Warren Buffett and Jamie Dimon previously supported reducing quarterly guidance, arguing it creates excessive focus on short-term results over sustainability.

  • Critics argue the current system provides essential investor transparency, noting US reporting standards are among the world's most reliable. The proposal would align with European practices of semiannual reporting.

Education Funding

  • The Education Department redirected nearly $500 million from Hispanic-serving colleges to historically Black and tribal colleges, cutting grants it called 'unconstitutional.' The move creates a 48% funding increase for HBCUs and doubles tribal college funding while eliminating decades-old programs serving Latino students.

  • The Justice Department argues Hispanic-Serving Institution grants violate the Constitution by requiring colleges to have 25% Hispanic enrollment. Education Secretary McMahon said the changes redirect money from 'discriminatory programs' toward merit-based education.

  • The cuts reverse programs created in 1998 after Congress found Latino students were graduating at far lower rates than white students. The department used discretionary funding authority from a congressional stopgap bill to implement the changes. An additional $60 million will go to charter schools and $137 million to civics education.

Evidence Ties Suspect to Kirk Murder

  • FBI Director Kash Patel revealed Monday that Charlie Kirk's accused killer sent a text message before the shooting stating he planned to kill the conservative activist. Tyler Robinson also allegedly wrote a physical note saying he had the 'opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk,' according to FBI claims about destroyed evidence. DNA matching Robinson was found on the rifle, and a screwdriver was recovered from the shooting site.

  • The 22-year-old suspect sent a Discord message to friends, apparently confessing to the crime, writing "It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this" shortly before his arrest Thursday night.

  • Investigators believe Robinson acted alone but are examining whether others helped plot the killing. Robinson was raised in a conservative family but had developed different political views, relatives told investigators. He's expected to face formal charges on Tuesday and could face the death penalty.
