Dolly Parton Passes

• Dolly Parton, the country music legend who became one of America's most recognizable entertainers, has died at 80. The cause of death was not disclosed. Parton had recently discussed ongoing health problems but said just days ago that she planned to continue working despite having "lost a step" following her husband's death last year.

• Born into poverty as one of 12 children in rural Tennessee, Parton built a six-decade career that included more than 100 million records sold and 11 Grammy Awards. She wrote classics including "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," crossed into Hollywood with films such as "9 to 5" and "Steel Magnolias," and built a business empire centered around Dollywood.

• Parton's influence extended well beyond entertainment. Her Imagination Library, created in honor of her illiterate father, has mailed more than 300 million free books to children worldwide. Her foundation also distributed more than $12 million to families after devastating 2016 wildfires in East Tennessee, part of decades of education and disaster-relief efforts centered on the region where she grew up.

Canada Strikes Back

• Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of U.S. goods Tuesday, escalating its trade dispute with the United States after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods over the weekend. The new Canadian tariffs will take effect Sept. 8 at rates ranging from 15% to 50%.

• More than 700 U.S. products will be affected, including steel and aluminum, dairy products, seafood, appliances, clothing, furniture and farm equipment. Many goods already facing 25% Canadian tariffs will see their rate double to 50%, while existing countertariffs on U.S. automobiles will remain in place.

• The measures deepen a trade fight between two economies with closely integrated supply chains across manufacturing, agriculture, energy and autos. Canada also announced a $5.4 billion support package for affected workers and businesses, while acknowledging its tariffs will raise some domestic costs. U.S. steel imports have already fallen 30% since Canada imposed its previous 25% tariff.

NFL's CTE Problem

• At least 25% of NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, according to a new study of 878 former players. CTE is a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head impacts that can cause memory problems, behavioral changes, and eventually dementia.

• Researchers called 25% a conservative estimate because CTE can only be diagnosed by examining the brain after death, meaning the disease status of most deceased players is unknown. After accounting for available brain donations and player data, researchers estimated the true prevalence could be substantially higher, with 97% representing the study's maximum possible rate.

• The findings also showed how severe the disease can become. More than 90% of players with Stage 4 CTE, its most advanced form, had also been diagnosed with dementia. Researchers are now working on a broader study expected in the coming months that will attempt to estimate the overall prevalence of CTE among NFL players at the time of their death.
