DeSantis to use Twitter to announce presidential bid
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to announce his 2024 presidential campaign tonight during a Twitter Spaces event with Elon Musk, according to insider sources. The event will take place at 6:00 PM ET.
Why it matters: In choosing Twitter, DeSantis has taken a page out of the playbook of Donald Trump, who leveraged social media to gain a cult-like following that ultimately voted him into the White House.
A changing Twittersphere: Big Tech companies have historically leaned to the left on the political spectrum and policed their platforms accordingly however, since acquiring Twitter last year, Elon Musk has taken steps to reverse this trend. The company immediately began reinstating many banned conservative accounts, which has made Musk popular with Republicans who felt their opinions were being censored. More recently, news programs and personalities like The Daily Wire and Tucker Carlson have announced efforts to bring their shows to Twitter.
Big picture: DeSantis’ team appears to understand the value of an engaged social media audience and has partnered their candidate with one of the most recognized voices in the world to announce his campaign. Musk also stands to benefit, as he tries to expand Twitter’s user base.
