DeSantis makes it official
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has officially filed his plans to seek the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election and announced his candidacy via Twitter.
Why it matters: DeSantis is viewed as the greatest threat to take the Republican nomination away from former President Donald Trump.
Breaking the mold: DeSantis chose to formally announce via a Twitter Spaces session with Elon Musk instead of on Fox News. However, the event got off to a rough start with an over 20-minute delay after the first link crashed. The second Twitter Spaces link glitched and dropped audio through the interview.
What others are saying: Critics seized the opportunity to attack the botched announcement, labeling it a major fail. Trump joined in and posted on his social media site, “Wow! The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER! His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!”
Key takeaways: DeSantis plans to employ the hardline conservative moves he has implemented in Florida as a “blueprint” for policies across the U.S. Some of those include banning critical race theory, restricting sexual orientation and gender identity discussions in classrooms, and banning abortions at six weeks.
Big picture: DeSantis is in for a fight against Trump for the Republican nomination but he appears to have already garnered support to overload the Twitter Space servers. The $110 million in campaign contributions won’t hurt his efforts either.
