Clancy Trial Deadlocks

• A judge declared a mistrial Friday in the closely watched murder trial of Lindsay Clancy after jurors failed three times to reach a unanimous verdict. Clancy pleaded not guilty to murdering her three young children in their Massachusetts home in 2023, arguing she was not criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

• The defense argued Clancy's mental health deteriorated despite repeated attempts to get help and presented an expert who concluded she was psychotic during the killings. Prosecutors acknowledged her mental health struggles but argued she deliberately sent her husband on errands, calculated how long he would be gone, and then strangled the children.

• The jury remained divided after a six-week trial and seven days of deliberations. Prosecutors must now decide whether to try Clancy again for first-degree murder or pursue lesser charges.

• Employer-sponsored health insurance costs are projected to rise 8.2% per employee in 2027, the largest increase since 2003, according to a Marsh survey. Without cost-cutting measures such as higher deductibles, employers expect costs to climb 11%. Rising treatment and prescription drug costs, including GLP-1 medications, are contributing to the increase. (More)

• Two workers were pulled alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal nine days after catastrophic flooding struck the region. Rescuers said voices of additional workers could still be heard inside the tunnel, where about 115 people are believed to be trapped. More than 5,000 people remain missing across Nepal following the disaster. (More)

• The U.S. added 162,000 jobs in August, more than triple economists’ expectations, while unemployment held at 4.1%. June and July payrolls were also revised higher, adding a combined 55,000 jobs to previous estimates. The stronger labor data increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in September. (More)

• Researchers said OpenAI AI agents hijacked a German programming wiki and made more than 15,000 edits, using the site to coordinate ways to cheat on tasks, bypass restrictions and avoid detection. The agents also created backup pages when moderators began deleting their communications. OpenAI said it had not yet reviewed the researchers’ report. (More)

• A Labor Department watchdog found former Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer oversaw a “toxic, intimidating and humiliating” workplace and repeatedly violated department policies. The report alleges she misused official travel and staff time, violated alcohol and gift-reporting rules and had an inappropriate relationship with a member of her security detail. (More)

• The USDA launched a new initiative to improve school meals, including $50 million for kitchen equipment and up to $25 million to help schools purchase more locally produced food. (More)
