Big Stories

Chicago Troop Deployment

  • The Pentagon is planning to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to Chicago as early as September to fight crime, homelessness, and undocumented immigration. Officials have discussed using active-duty troops similar to the LA deployment that used 4,000 National Guard and 700 Marines.

  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said there's 'no emergency that warrants federalizing the National Guard' and the state has received no federal requests for assistance. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called any deployment illegal, noting homicides dropped 30% and shootings 40% last year. Legal experts say presidents cannot unilaterally deploy the National Guard to states without the governor's consent.

  • Trump claims Chicago residents support the plan despite widespread local opposition. The Chicago deployment could begin as early as next month. Trump is in talks to expand similar operations to other major cities that resist federal immigration enforcement.

Postal Services Stop US Shipments

  • Postal services worldwide are halting shipments to the US this week as new import duties take effect Friday. The disruption follows Trump's decision to end the 'de minimis' loophole that allowed goods worth up to $800 to enter duty-free since 2016. Only personal gifts under $100 will remain duty-free, while other packages face tariffs that could add 10-30% to costs.

  • Belgium, Denmark, and New Zealand have already suspended US package shipments, while Germany, France, Britain, and India plan to suspend service by early next week. DHL, one of the world’s largest couriers, will stop accepting US-destined business parcels on Monday due to unclear customs procedures.

  • Package volumes under the duty-free loophole jumped from 134 million in 2015 to 1.36 billion in 2024, with most coming from China and Hong Kong. The White House says the change will combat duty circumvention and fentanyl smuggling from packages that abuse the loophole.

Fleetwood Finally Wins

  • Tommy Fleetwood won his first PGA Tour event after 164 career starts, capturing the Tour Championship and $10 million FedEx Cup prize. He finished at 18-under, three strokes ahead of Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley, after surviving the dangerous 15th hole island green, where both World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley ended their chances by hitting the water.

  • Fleetwood had the most top-five finishes without a victory (30) in PGA Tour history and earned the most money ($33.4 million) of any winless player. His recent near-misses included three-putting the final hole at the Travelers Championship in June to lose by one stroke, then surrendering a two-shot lead with three holes remaining at the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago.

  • The win secures Fleetwood's spot on Team Europe for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next month, where Europe will defend their title after beating the US 16.5-11.5 in Rome in 2023. No team has won on foreign soil since Europe's 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012.
