3 Palestinians college students shot in Burlington, Vermont

Police in Burlington, Vermont are searching for a white man who is suspected of shooting three Palestinians on Saturday night.

  • Catch up: The three men were visiting one of the victim’s relatives for Thanksgiving when an armed white man allegedly approached them without speaking and fired at least four shots. Two of the victims are in stable condition while the third has much more serious injuries.

  • What they’re saying: Investigators are urging the public not to jump to conclusions about the motive behind the attacks but acknowledged that it is hard not to assume the crime is hate-related. Meanwhile, the victim’s families called on police to “conduct a thorough investigation, including treating this as a hate crime.”

  • The incident comes more than a month after the stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian boy in Chicago. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said there has been a surge in anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias incidents reported in the U.S. since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

Cop in George Floyd muder stabbed in prison

Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of George Floyd’s murder, was stabbed in prison.

  • Background: Chauvin, who is white, knelt on Floyd’s neck, who was black, for several minutes while attempting to arrest him in May, 2020. Floyd died during the incident. The footage of his death sparked nationwide protests over racial injustice and police brutality.

  •  What happened: Chauvin was stabbed at the Federal Correction Institution in Arizona on Friday. Life saving measures were taken before he was transferred to a hospital where he is in stable condition. It in unclear what caused the altercation and his attorney hasn’t responded to questions.

  • Chauvin is concurrently serving two 20+ year sentences for George Floyd’s murder. He recently appealed the verdict in hopes of reducing his sentence but it was shot down by the Supreme Court.

Protestors rally in Italy over violence against women after the killing of 22-year-old

Thousands of people gathered across Italy to protest violence against women days after the murder of a young student rocked the country.

  • Details: Italians gathered in Italy’s main cities in support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women after a 22-year-old university student, Giulia Cecchettin, was killed before her graduation. Her former boyfriend and alleged murderer was extradited on Saturday from Germany where he had fled.

  • The Italian Interior Ministry reports that 106 women have been killed in Italy this year. And in the days since Cecchettin’s murder, calls to a national hotline from women who feel unsafe because of men have jumped from 200 to 400 a day.

  • What’s being done: Earlier this week the Italian Parliament approved new measure to crack down on violence towards females. Among the measures being introduced is a campaign in schools to address sexism, machismo and psychological and physical violence against women.

  • One of the world’s biggest icebergs is floating beyond Antarctic waters after being grounded for more than 30 years. It measures 1,500 square miles, making it 3x bigger than New York City. (More)

  • Attackers seized an Israeli-linked tanker off the coast of Yemen on Sunday, marking the third maritime attack in recent days related to the Israel-Hamas war. No group has claimed responsibility. (More)
