Abrego Garcia Saga (Cont.)

  • A federal judge blocked the Trump administration from deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, calling the removal "absolutely forbidden" until further hearings. Abrego Garcia was detained on Monday at an ICE check-in just three days after being freed from criminal charges in Tennessee.

  • The government offered Abrego Garcia a deal to plead guilty to human smuggling charges and be deported to Costa Rica, which accepts him as a citizen. When he refused the plea, the administration said it would send him to Uganda instead, which he fears will return him to El Salvador. His lawyers claim this constitutes selective and vindictive prosecution for refusing to cooperate.

  • Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March despite a 2019 court order blocking his removal due to safety fears, then brought back to the US in June.

LA Burglary Ring Busted

  • LAPD arrested eight suspects in a coordinated operation, breaking up the 'Rich Roll Burglary Crew' responsible for 92 residential break-ins across LA since 2022. The suspects have ties to Crips street gangs. The crew used sophisticated surveillance methods, including planting cameras in flower beds to monitor victims and WiFi jammers to disable security systems.

  • The breakthrough came in February when officers arrested three suspects in a vehicle recognized from previous burglaries, leading to intelligence that cracked the wider operation. During warrant executions, police recovered burglary tools, stolen firearms, ammunition, jewelry, luxury handbags, and credit cards. Officers also arrested 'fencers' who sold stolen goods through pawn shops and online marketplaces.

  • LA has had a recent wave of celebrity home break-ins, though officials didn't publicly connect this crew to those high-profile cases. Prosecutors are seeking maximum penalties, including potential lifetime sentences for suspects with prior convictions. Another 45 burglaries remain under investigation.

First Pig Lung Transplant

  • Chinese surgeons achieved the first pig-to-human lung transplant. The genetically modified organ functioned for nine days in a brain-dead recipient. The breakthrough could eventually help address the critical organ shortage, where only 10% of global transplant needs are currently met.

  • The pig lung initially worked without triggering immediate rejection, but showed fluid buildup within 24 hours and progressive damage over time despite immunosuppressive drugs. Lungs pose unique transplant challenges because they're constantly exposed to external threats through breathing, making immune responses more aggressive. Brain death itself may have complicated the inflammatory response.

  • Researchers say clinical trials are years away since patients would need both lungs to survive independently. A more immediate approach involves rehabilitating rejected human donor lungs for use, which could be implemented within years rather than decades. Previous pig heart and kidney recipients have survived months in some cases.
