Bank of America hit with $150M fine for fake accounts & junk fees

Matt Rourke/AP
Federal regulators are fining Bank of America $150 million for doubling overdraft fees, withholding credit card rewards, and opening fake customer accounts.
What’s happening? Bank of America must refund $100 million to customers, pay $90 million in fines to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and $60 million to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
“Bank of America wrongfully withheld credit card rewards, double-dipped on fees, and opened accounts without consent,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, in a statement.
Details: Bank of America’s list of wrongdoings includes:
Charging customers $35 after their card had been declined due to insufficient funds and allowing the fees to be repeatedly charged for the same transaction.
Offering customers credit card rewards when they signed up and then illegally withholding the bonuses.
Since at least 2012, "Bank of America employees illegally applied for and enrolled consumers in credit card accounts without consumers’ knowledge or authorization," the CFPB said.
Zoom out: The situation is smaller but very similar to the charges brought against Wells Fargo where employees opened millions of unauthorized bank accounts in order to reach unrealistic sales goals. The fiasco cost Well Fargo $3 billion.
What’s next? The CFPB ordered Bank of America to stop the practices and compensate its customers. However, it seems like a slap on the wrist for a company that raked in over $115 billion in revenue in 2022.
