Trump classified documents trial set for May 2024

(Scott Morgan | Reuters)
A Florida federal judge set the start date for Donald Trump’s trial on charges of mishandling classified documents for May 20, 2024.
Catch me up: In June, Trump was charged with 37 criminal counts linked to his alleged efforts to keep classified information after he left the White House and for obstruction of justice.
Why it matters: The trial will begin right after the Republican nominee is selected and as the general election is gearing up.
The judge didn’t satisfy either party’s scheduling requests: Trump’s lawyers wanted the trial to begin after the 2024 presidential election, and the prosecution team wanted to get going in December.
Zoom out: The trial date falls after the majority of key states have already held their nominating contents.
If Trump becomes the Republican nominee - he’s currently leading DeSantis by 30 points in the polls - he will likely use the trial to fuel his reelection campaign.
Winning the election would also give him the chance to place sympathetic Justice Department officials, or even try to pardon himself if he’s convicted, according to an Axios report.
Bottom line: Trump is facing four separate criminal probes that will stretch well into 2024 and his presidential term if he’s elected.
