Another day another Southwest delay
Southwest is at it again. Passengers were delayed nationwide as the airline grounded 1,800 flights after the company experienced an intermittent technology issue on Tuesday. The technical error only caused a 17 minute ground stop, but it was enough to delay over 40% of flights on the east coast by midday.
This latest incident will only enhance the negative image Southwest has given itself over the last few years. In December, the airline cancelled 17,000 flights in a 10-day window around the Christmas holiday after a winter storm froze its operations in Denver and Chicago and overwhelmed the systems used to reschedule pilots and flight attendants. The cancellations ruined the vacation plans of over two million travelers and cost Southwest more than $1 billion.
Southwest released a report done by an outside firm that found “insufficient winter infrastructure” and “crew and passenger scheduling software issues” to be the main reasons why the airline blew it so badly in December. A bunch of updates are in the works to improve both problems and are expected to go live before next winter. It would appear that they are still working out the kinks.
