Big Stories

America Turns 250

  • Americans across the country celebrated the nation's 250th birthday Saturday with parades, fireworks, concerts and community gatherings despite extreme heat and thunderstorms that disrupted events in several cities. Millions turned out from New York's Parade of Sail to celebrations in Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., marking the country's largest Independence Day milestone since the Bicentennial in 1976.

  • Storms forced delays and cancellations in parts of the country, including Washington and Boston, but many celebrations resumed once the weather cleared. Fireworks lit the skies over the National Mall, while communities gathered for backyard barbecues, historical reenactments, concerts, and local festivals celebrating the anniversary.

  • For many attendees, the day centered less on politics than on tradition, family, and the country's founding ideals. An NBC poll released Friday found nearly 80% of Americans said they were willing to set aside political differences to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary, at least for the holiday.

Iran Leaders Reappear

  • Senior Iranian officials appeared publicly yesterday during funeral prayers for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, their first major public appearance since the war. Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, did not attend and is believed to remain in hiding after reportedly being wounded in the strike that killed his father.

  • Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran as President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and senior military leaders joined the funeral. Crowds chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," while some mourners called for retaliation against President Donald Trump.

  • Funeral ceremonies are expected to continue through Thursday, delaying negotiations between Iran and the United States over a permanent ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran's nuclear program. Shipping traffic through the strait has resumed but remains below prewar levels as mine-clearing operations continue.

Ancient Egyptian Finds

  • Egypt announced two major archaeological discoveries Saturday, including a well-preserved Byzantine-era settlement in the Dakhla Oasis and 18 newly uncovered Greco-Roman tombs near Alexandria.

  • The Dakhla Oasis settlement revealed an organized city with streets, public squares, homes, a fourth-century basilica, and defensive watchtowers. Archaeologists also uncovered coins, bread ovens, and more than 200 inscribed pottery fragments that document commercial transactions and everyday life nearly 1,700 years ago.

  • At the Marina el-Alamein archaeological site, researchers discovered 18 additional tombs, including a granite sarcophagus containing human remains, a plaster sphinx statue, and gold funerary ornaments placed in the mouths of some of the deceased. The discoveries bring the total number of tombs uncovered at the site to 48.
