David DePape found guilty in Paul Pelosi hammer attack case

A federal jury convicted the man who attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, in the couple’s San Francisco home last year.

  • Charges: The jury convicted David Depape of attempted kidnaping of a U.S. official and assault of an immediate family member of a federal official. He faces up to 50 years in prison for the charges.

  • Background: Depape broke into the couple’s home demanding to know where then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was. When police arrived, Depape attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer causing a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

  • Trending violence: Violent crimes against public servants have increased over the last few years and court officials hope the verdicts will serve as a deterrent against political violence.

Lawmakers want George Santos out after House Ethics report

House lawmakers in both parties are saying they will vote to expel Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) after a damming House Ethics Committee report.

  • Third time's the charm: Santos has survived two prior expulsion votes but is now losing support from some who previously voted against his ousting.

  • Details: The report accuses Santos of stealing from his campaign and filing false reports to the Federal Election Committee and the House, attempting to cover up the fraud.

  • Doomed: Many members who previously “voted” no or “present” said they will now vote to expel. The House will vote on expulsion after Thanksgiving and Santos will likely be the first member of Congress to be expelled since 2002.

Bangladesh garment workers’ salary protests met with violence

Workers in Bangladesh are being threatened and beaten for demanding a higher minimum wage

  • Bangladesh is one of the world’s biggest producers of fast fashion, providing millions of tons of clothing for popular brands. These brands are drawn to the area because orders and labor are cheap.

  • Raw deal: Garment factory workers are protesting because fast fashion brands claim to support a living wage but are only required to pay the workers who make their clothes the legal monthly wage — a meager 8,000 taka ($63).

  • Courage: The Indian government agreed to raise the minimum to 12,500 taka ($98), but workers insist they need 23,000 to keep their families from starving. They continue to protest for wage rights knowing they will be beaten by factory owners and police for doing so.

Israeli military says it found body of hostage held by Hamas

The Israeli military said it found a body of a women who was kidnapped by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack.

  • Details: The Israeli Defense Forces said Yehudit Weiss’ body was found in a building next to the Shifa Hostipal and was taken back to Israeli territory. It added that it also found a cache of military equipment, including guns and RPGs.

  • State of play: The U.S. and IDF have claimed that the Shifa Hospital is being used as a command center for Hamas. The IDF also said it found information about the hostages on a computer at the hospital. Hamas said the claims are “ridiculous.”

GM union strike is officially over

General Motors union workers ratified a record deal with the United Auto Workers after a testy final few days of voting.

  • The voting was as bumpy as the negotiations themselves with a large a majority of GM assembly plants rejecting the deal. However, it wasn’t enough to offset support at other facilities.

  • Ford and Stellantis: The remaining contracts have a big lead at the other two automakers, with just over 66% voting in favor, according to the UAW website.

  • The payout: If all three contracts are approved by 146,000 union members, wage gains will work out to be about 33% after increases and cost-of-living adjustments.

MLB owners approve Atheltics’ relocation

Major League Baseball owners voted unanimously to allow the Oakland Athletics to move to Las Vegas.

  • The move comes after the team tried and failed for 20 years to secure a new stadium in the city to replace the Oakland Coliseum.

  • Not so fast: The move isn’t final yet. A teachers union in Nevada is challenging the $380 million the state has committed to the construction of a $1.5 billion stadium on the Las Vegas strip.

  • More challenges: The Athletics’ lease with the Oakland Coliseum ends after the 2024 season and the team doesn’t have a place to play before the Las Vegas stadium is ready in 2028.

Sean “Diddy” Combs sued for rape, sex trafficking

Singer Cassie sued music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs Thursday, accusing him of raping and sex trafficking her over the course of a decade.

  • What she’s saying: Cassie alleges that Diddy frequently abused her sexually and physically during their relationship and feels that she owes it to herself and other victims of abuse to step forward.

  • Why now? Since last November, the Adult Survivors Act has allowed accusers to file claims of sexual abuse during a one-year window that otherwise would be dismissed by the statute of limitations.

  • Diddy’s lawyer said he denies the claims and that Cassie is seeking a payday after Comb’s refused to pay her $30 million in exchange for not writing a book about their relationship.

Amazon to start selling cars

Soon Hyundai dealers will be allowed to sell new cars on the Amazon platform.

  • Amazon announced it plans Thursday during the Los Angeles Auto Show. Customers will be able to search for vehicles based on desired features while also choosing payment and finance options.

  • Kickbacks: Hyundai agreed to begin installing Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant into its vehicles beginning in 2025.

  • The catch: Buying cars on Amazon should make the process easier but you’ll still be dealing with dealerships. Most automakers aren’t allowed to sell new vehicles directly to consumers because they have franchise agreements with dealers — they sell cars wholesale to dealers, which sell them to customers.

Measles rose at a “staggering” rate last year

Measles cases and deaths soared worldwide last year, according to a new report from the WHO and CDC.

  • Why? The pandemic disrupted global immunization efforts and they haven’t fully rebounded. The disease is preventable with a common vaccine but without distribution the disease thrived.

  • By the numbers: 37 countries had outbreaks last year with 9,232,300 infections, and 136,200 deaths — a 43% increase from 2021.

  • Alarm bell: Experts say that there hasn’t been any progress in reversing the pandemic-driven decline in low-income countries where the risk of death from measles is highest.
