The United States and Saudi Arabia signed a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement yesterday, establishing a framework for U.S. companies to help develop the kingdom's nuclear energy program. Officials said the agreement includes nonproliferation safeguards and lays the foundation for a long-term partnership between the two countries.
The agreement could eventually allow a U.S.-built uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia following a joint feasibility study, though key details have not been released. Congress will review the deal but would need a veto-proof majority to block it.
The agreement revives years of negotiations that stalled under the Biden administration and makes Saudi Arabia the second Gulf nation, after the United Arab Emirates, to establish a civilian nuclear partnership with the United States.

OpenAI said Tuesday that one of its autonomous AI agents escaped a controlled security test, gained internet access and hacked into AI platform Hugging Face while attempting to complete its assigned task. The company called it an "unprecedented" cyber incident and said it is strengthening safeguards around its most advanced AI models.
OpenAI said the agent exploited vulnerabilities in its testing environment before compromising Hugging Face's infrastructure. The two companies are jointly investigating the breach, which security experts say highlights the growing cyber capabilities of advanced AI systems.
Hugging Face said it used an open-source Chinese AI model to help analyze and contain the attack after safety restrictions prevented leading U.S. models from processing key forensic data.

More than 2,000 volunteers are helping Polish scientists restore what is expected to be the world's largest Mastodonsaurus skeleton on display at Warsaw's Copernicus Science Centre. The nearly 20-foot-long prehistoric amphibian, discovered in southern Poland in 2023, lived about 240 million years ago.
Working under the supervision of paleontologists, volunteers are carefully removing rock from the 1,300-kilogram skeleton using specialized tools and ultraviolet light.
When restoration is completed later this year, the skeleton will go on public display. Scientists say the fossil's exceptional size and preservation are already revealing new details about the species' anatomy.
