US stock markets closed lower on Tuesday (S&P -1.16%, Nasdaq -1.14%, Dow -1.02%) ~ Shares of major banks like JPMorgan and Wells Fargo fell on Tuesday after Fitch ratings agency warned it may have to downgrade credit ratings for dozens of banks. The financial dips combined with China’s report of disappointing economic data had a negative effect on the market as a whole. (More)
Tesla launches cheaper lower-range Model X and Model S
Tesla rolled out new versions of the Model X and Model S that are $10,000 less than the regular models. The Model X Standard Range starts at $88,490 compared to $98,490 for the Model X. The Model S Standard Range starts at a price of $78,490 versus $88,490 for the Model S. The discounted models will have an average range that is around 80 miles less per charge. (More)
Cava shares surge as Mediterranean restaurant chain swings to a profit in first report since IPO
Cava posted a profitable quarter for its first earning report since its initial public offering in June. Cava reported a net income of $6.5 million, swinging from a net loss of $8.2 million a year earlier. The stock popped as much as 12% in extended trading. Shares have more than doubled since its IPO and the company had a market value of $5.27 billion as of Tuesday’s close. (More)

Trump and allies charged in Georgia election probe
Former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants, including his lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, were indicted Monday on felony charges related to their efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. The 41 felony counts include racketeering charges, conspiracy to commit forgery, and perjury. This marks the fourth time Trump has been indicted in the last 4½ months. (More)
Entire police force in Minnesota city resigns over pay concerns
The small city of Goodhue, Minnesota is without a police force as its chief and officers resigned over low pay. Mayor Ellen Anderson Buck said that the county sheriff’s office will patrol the city when the officers’ contracts expire later this month. Buck also insisted that the city will have police coverage but acknowledged the difficulty of hiring new officers. There are about 200 open police jobs in Minnesota, she said. (More)
Ex-FBI official pleads guilty to assisting sanctioned Russian oligarch
Former FBI Special Agent Charles McGonigal pleaded guilty on Tuesday to multiple charges in connection to working with a sanctioned Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska in 2021. He admitted quilt to conspiracy charges involving the violation of US sanctions and money laundering. Deripaska was among the dozens of people connected to Russian President Vladimir Putin who received sanctions in 2018 for meddling in the US elections. (More)

Afghan Taliban celebrate return to power two years on amid erosion of women's rights
The Taliban is commemorating the two year mark since it seized control of the capital city of Kabul after US forces withdrew in 2021. The country is experiencing overall peace but the U.N. says there have been dozens of attacks on civilians, some claimed by Islamic State rivals of the Taliban. Women are not faring well under the new regime. Girls over twelve mostly cannot attend school and most Afghan females are barred from working at aid agencies. Beauty salons have been closed and women can’t visit parks or travel without a male guardian. Journalism has also been suppressed. (More)
Typhoon Lan hits western Japan
Typhoon Lan struck the country on Tuesday prompting evacuation warnings for more than 237,000 people across 11 prefectures. At least 26 people have been injured. Wind speeds reached 100 mph, equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane. The rainfall over a few hours exceeded the monthly average for August in certain areas. All commercial flights out of Kansai, Chubu, and Nagoya airports were suspended and more than 950 flights were canceled nationwide. (More)
Croatian police looking for 10 handball players from Burundi missing from competition
Police in Croatia are looking for 10 young handball players from Burundi who went missing before a world championship match. The players disappeared last Wednesday and have not been returning phone calls since. According to media reports, the players may have planned their escape, using their visas to seek asylum in Europe. (More)

Women's World Cup 2023: Spain advances to final
Spain earned its first trip to a Women’s World Cup final after defeating Sweden 2-1, with the winning goal coming in the final minute of the game. Disney accused of withholding hundreds of millions of dollars from ‘Avatar’ sequel financier
Hollywood financier TSG Entertainment is suing Disney for breach of contract. The lawsuit accuses Disney and 20th Century Fox of withholding profits and cutting deals to boost its streaming platforms and stock price. TSG claims that Disney’s action deprived it of cash to invest in other projects. (More)
Ticketmaster is selling "listening seats" with "no view" for Beyoncé's tour
Ticketmaster has been quietly selling "listening seats" or “listening-only” seats at some stops on Beyoncé's mega tour, listing them as having "no view" or "no stage view." The tickets prices have ranged from $50 in Washington D.C. to $226 plus taxes and fees in Atlanta. Some people who purchased these seats said that only the screen was visible while others reported that they had a view of the stage. (More)

Michigan State University workers stumble across buried, 142-year-old campus observatory
MSU employees were digging holes near a student residence hall when they found a hard, impenetrable surface under the ground. The workers contacted the Archaeology department who referred back to old maps to determine what the workers had found was the foundation of the university’s first observatory. The building was constructed in 1881 after the school acquired its first telescope and needed a place to mount it. (More)
The New York Times prohibits using its content to train AI models
The publication has updated its terms and conditions barring third parties from scraping its content to train artificial intelligence models. Several other news organizations have already signed an open letter calling for global lawmakers to create rules that would require companies to disclose how they train datasets and to get the consent from rights holders before using data for training. Most U.S. adults have a family or personal connection to addiction
Addiction is impacting family relationships, mental health, and finances of most adults in the US, according to a new KFF poll. 66% of American adults have a personal of familial experience with alcohol or drug addiction. However, the connection to addiction was more likely to be through a family member than personal. (More)
