Man flies 23 million miles for $290,000

A U.S. man who bought a lifetime pass from United Airlines thirty years ago has flown more than 23 million miles and visited 100 countries.

Break it down: Tom Stuker paid $290,000 for the pass in 1990 in a decision he said is the “best investment of his life.”

  • In 2019 alone Stuker took 379 flights covering 1.46 million miles.

  • If he had paid cash, the flights would have cost $2.44m.

King of the sky: Besides saving millions in ticket costs, more doors were opened for Stuker once he reached the 5m and 10m frequent flyer mile marks.

  • The perks include lavish hotel suites worldwide, weeks long ultra-lux Crystal cruises, and gourmet dining wherever he goes.

  • He also used the miles to “redo his brother’s house,” and cash out $50,000 worth of Walmart gift cards in a single day.

Yes, but: When asked about his carbon footprint Stuker said, “It would be much more relevant If I was flying in a private jet. Those are the people that could help the environment much more than I can if they flew commercial.”
