Tyson is closing four plants as chicken sales slump
The company, which supplies a fifth of the beef, pork, and chicken in the U.S., is shutting down four plants. Two plants will be shuttered in Missouri, one in Indiana, and one in Arkansas. Chicken breast prices were down in July 60% compared to the second quarter of last year, cutting into the company’s revenue by 3.5%. (More)
Campbell Soup buys Rao's sauce maker for $2.7B
Campbell Soup announced that it will buy Sovos Brands, the parent company of Rao’s pasta sauce for $2.7 billion. Last year, Sovos posted more than $837 million in annual adjusted net sales. Rao’s is a premium sauce brand with jars averaging around 10 dollars and will help Campbell’s capture a part of the market not already served by their Prego brand. (More)

Boater missing for day and a half rescued off Florida coast in half-submerged boat
The Coast Guard rescued 25-year-old Charles Gregory 12 miles off St. Augustine, Florida, on Saturday morning after a quickly rising tide swept him out to sea early Friday morning. His father said he “struggled to stay alive” in a half-sunken 12-foot boat while spotting sharks and enduring jellyfish stings. He is dehydrated; and severely sunburnt but recovering at home and expected to be OK. (More)
Officer who held back crowd during George Floyd’s murder sentenced to over 4 years in prison
A Minnesota judge sentenced Tou Thao to four years and nine months in prison for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Thao held back a crowd of upset bystanders as his colleagues held down George Floyd and choked him to death during an arrest in May 2020. All four former officers involved in Floyd’s death have been convicted of crimes in the years since. (More)
Eastern US storm outbreak knocks out power to over 1 million
Around 120 million people in the Eastern U.S. were impacted by damaging weather Monday that brought high wind gusts, hail, drenching rainfall, and even a few tornadoes. The wind reached speeds of 71 mph, and knocked out power for over 1 million people. Nearly 1,500 flights were canceled Monday with 7,000 additional delays at major hubs like Atlanta. (More)

The UK government moves asylum-seekers to a barge off southern coast
Fifteen asylum-seekers were moved onto a barge in southern England as the government tries to cut the cost of sheltering people seeking protection in the country. The floating hostel will eventually house up to 500 men across three stories of closely packed bedrooms. It also includes a kitchen, dining area, common rooms, and laundry facilities. A charity for refugees blocked the transfer of 20 asylum-seekers saying that living conditions were inhumane. (More)
Eritrean festival canceled by Toronto following outbreaks of violence
Clashes between attendees and protestors left nine people in the hospital over the weekend. The violence in Toronto followed similar confrontations in Sweden and Seattle involving Eritrean protesters who say the cultural event offers support to one of the world’s most repressive regimes. Critics say the festival raises funds to finance the African country’s military establishment. The country hasn’t held an election since it gained independence three decades ago. (More)
Ukraine says it’s foiled assassination plot against Zelensky
Ukraine has detained an alleged informant for Russia in connection to a plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) said the woman had been “gathering intelligence” about Zelensky’s planned visit to the region of Mykolaiv at the end of July, in order to plan a Russian airstrike to kill the president. The SBU got wind of the plan and foiled the plot. They also caught the woman “red-handed” as she “was trying to pass intelligence to the invaders.” (More)

Sandra Bullock's partner Bryan Randall dead at 57 following battle with ALS
After a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, Randall died on Aug. 5. The model-turned-photographer chose to keep his battle with ALS private. Bullock stepped back from film roles in 2022 to focus more on her family life with Randall. (More)
William Friedkin, ‘The Exorcist’ Director, Dies at 87
The director, who was best known for his Oscar-winning “The French Connection” and smash hit “The Exorcist”, died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 87. The Exorcist, which grossed $500 million worldwide, along with “The Godfather” ushered in the blockbuster era in motion pictures. His final film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” starring Kiefer Sutherland, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. (More)

England edged out Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shoot out to advance to the round of 16. Trumpetfish shadow other species to sneak up on their prey
Researchers say that the fish hide themselves behind other fish when hunting. It is the first non-human example of a predator using another animal to conceal itself while approaching its prey. Lead researcher Dr. Sam Matchette said the collapse of coral reefs worldwide means that animals are being forced to adapt their behavior. Sea creatures may start seeking each other rather than their habitat for concealment. (More)
Chandrayaan-3: Historic India Moon mission sends new photos of lunar surface
The images show craters on the lunar surface getting larger as the spacecraft draws closer. Chandrayaan’s lander and rover are due to reach the surface on Aug. 23. If successful, India will be the first country to perform a controlled “soft landing” near the south pole. It will also become only the fourth to achieve a soft landing on the Moon joining the U.S., the former Soviet Union, and China. (More)
Stimulating your sense of smell could boost your memory
Older adults exposed to smells while they slept performed better on verbal memory tests and showed improved function in a brain pathway that supports memory formation, according to a study published in the Frontier in Neuroscience. The preliminary study suggests that olfactory stimulation could help slow the rate at which the brain ages. (More)
