1 Year of Israel/Hamas War

Today is the one-year mark in the Israel-Hamas war.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out the deadliest attack in Israel's history. Israel reported that 1,200 people were killed, and more than 250 were taken hostage — 91 of which are still missing. The attack started a war that has devastated Gaza, where over 41,800 people have been killed, and most of the 2.3 million residents have been displaced.
A year into the war, there is little hope of a peaceful resolution. Israel continues to pummel Gaza with missiles and has begun facing off with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah — an Iranian-backed terrorist group & ally of Hamas — started firing rockets into northern Israel in support of Hamas shortly after the Oct. 7th attack.
Meanwhile, 26 people were killed Friday in Israeli airstrikes on a mosque and school sheltering displaced Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. Israel said Hamas was running command and control centers at the site, while Hamas denied they use civilian locations for operations.

Trump Returns to Butler

Trump speaks at his rally in Butler, PA. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
Former President Trump returned to Butler, Pennsylvania, for a rally 84 days after being shot in the ear at a previous event.
The rally was both a tribute to his supporter Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the assassination attempt, and to continue his campaign that was cut short by the attack.
Security was much tighter this time, with drones, dogs, and officers everywhere, and Trump spoke from behind bulletproof glass. The rally included prayer, opera music, and a moment of silence to honor Comperatore.
The rally felt much different from the chaotic aftermath of the shooting. This time, there were food stands, music, and a large crowd. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, spoke earlier, urging Americans to remember unity despite political divisions. Tech billionaire Elon Musk also made an appearance to support Trump’s campaign.

Supreme Court Back in Session

USA Today
The Supreme Court resumes session today to decide on several important issues.
Issues for this session include gun laws, whether minors can get gender-affirming care, and if adults need to show ID to access porn websites. The justices might also be involved in cases about the upcoming election, especially if it's close.
One of the first cases they'll review is about "ghost guns" and whether President Biden can make rules that require background checks and serial numbers for these untraceable weapons kits.
The court will also look at whether states can make people verify their age before viewing certain adult content online. Texas says it's to protect kids, but critics argue it could expose users' private info.
Lastly, the court will decide on whether states can ban gender-affirming care for minors, with Tennessee's ban being challenged. The decision could impact how much power states have to regulate medical care for young people.
